ABDULMARI IMAO was a multi-genre artist who integrated Islamic, Tausug and Maranaw themes in his body of work. He was fond of using the okir, the sarimanok and the naga in his creations and subsequently was credited for popularizing these in the national Filipino consciousness. He was tutored by masters like Guillermo Tolentino and Napoleon Abueva during his college years in UP and took post-collegiate courses abroad. Aside from being a well-known sculptor, he was also a painter, photographer, ceramist, cultural researcher, documentary film maker, writer, and a patron of Philippine Muslim art. He was declared National Artist in 2006 and died in 2014.
The owner of the piece recognizes Imao as a Maranaw, and will donate part of the proceeds to the victims of the Marawi Siege.
